“Get Up, My Daughter”

Commissioned by the Martha Graham Dance Company and performed at the Joyce Theater.

“Get Up, My Daughter” was created on the dancers of the Martha Graham Dance Company and explores feminine grief, strength, and sisterhood. It is at once, a rallying cry, an apology and a prayer.

My professional background in the sensorial movement practice, “Gaga” and the somatics and energetics of the Ilan Lev Method, have led me to the development of particular movement pathways, coordinations, and textures which, for this new creation, we overlayed and overlapped with classic Graham principles, movements, and form. This found movement language feels vibrant, raw, expressive, deeply feminine, and simultaneously ancient and original. It both honors the legacy and inheritance inside of these dancers, and transmutes and reimagines how we live in our bodies, our flesh, our bones.
